No giving up, ever. (Darko)…My mind understands Darko is gone, but my heart does not and will not (Mom)

This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Darko Durbic, who was born in Banja Luka Bosnia on November 14, 1987, raised in Mississauga Canada, and passed away on July 31, 2008 at the age of 20

Darko seemed to attract people to him wherever he went. This started early at elementary school. If Darko liked something new, the other kids liked it too. If Darko wore a new style, the other kids wanted to wear it. He was a natural leader. At the same time, his admiration for his older brother Marko was evident to all. He spoke very highly of him, taking up the same hobbies and interests; From clothing, to music, to sports, Darko would initially tease his brother’s choices, then quietly called them his own.

Making new friends was never a problem for Darko. He didn't have just one best friend, as all of them were so close. Darko would never say no to spending time with them. He was a free-spirited, happy-go-lucky young man genuinely interested in people and would help anyone who needed it. And yet he was intensely private about his own feelings and emotions and would never tell anyone of his own problems. Darko never sought or asked for assistance, much preferring to sort through things in his own mind.

Darko eventually followed his brother's advice to go away to university, and it was on his very first day at Wilfrid Laurier that he met Aimee. Aimee and Darko became best friends, often teased of wanting to be more. Their friendship blossomed to a love one could only wish for in their lifetime. The whole family saw a change in him; there was no denying he was in love. Aimee brought out the best in Darko, and he was at his happiest when he was with her. Their souls were meant to find one another.

Darko truly was a beautiful person; we've never known a person whose beauty, outer or inner, could compare to his. His heart and his spirit were stronger than steel. He gave himself freely and without fear in every single one of his relationships. He was innocent and thoughtful and honest and real. He was never quick to judge, but always quick to forgive and trust. He was funny and sweet and strong and smart, and he loved to laugh. His infectious laugh was always there and remains still in our minds. Above all, Darko gave love in his life and in doing so, changed people.

We can only guess or speculate on what happened and why, but a young life that once held so much promise was suddenly lost inexplicably. We can only hope and pray that Darko didn't suffer too much and that his spirit has now taken flight and been released into new realms of freedom and knowledge.

He is so very missed. We will love, honor, and remember him forever.
